Short Fed Steers

Australian Premium Brands offers a range of grain fed steer programs to suite any retail or foodservice application. Our short fed program specifically means cattle that have been fed a high energy ration in an "Aus-Meat" Accredited feedlot for a minimum of 100-days but generally 120-days or over.

The Australian cattle breeds in the temperate regions have remained pure for the most part, with Angus and Hereford as the dominant breed-lines. Cattle in the Northern regions have Brahman influence in order for the cattle to tolerate and perform in extremely hot, dry conditions. Our core USA grain fed programs draw on the temperate cattle, with Angus and Hereford breeding.

Nippon Meat Packers Australia's feedlot, Whyalla is one of the most technically advanced feeding operations in the world today and is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Whyalla's 75 thousand head capacity produces some of the finest beef including Wagyu (Kobe)  and 300-day fed pure Angus.

The short fed program produces our Choice, Select and NR equivalent grades packed for the US. Our customers have learned that graded shortfed beef is interchangeable with it's mid-western counterpart.

Cattle in our short fed program are fed a high energy ration consisting of Corn, Barley, Wheat and Sorghum. Hay and silage are included for roughage. This is a balanced natural  diet with no animal proteins or antibiotics added.

Prior to fabrication, carcasses are graded using objective standards chips for meat color, fat color and marbling. Maturity is determined primarily by dentition in combination with ossification. This grading program enables us to pack product to a high level of performance predictability.

Our grain fed beef is clearly labeled "Grain Fed" and is USDA approved.
